An ultrasonic homogenizer operates by utilizing power ultrasound, typically in the range of 20 to 30 kilohertz, to achieve these homogenization effects. The ultrasonic homogenizer, also known as probe-type sonicator, generates ultrasound waves that are transmitted into the sample through a probe (sonotrode) immersed in the liquid. These energy-dense waves create rapid pressure changes that lead to the formation of microscopic bubbles, a process known as cavitation. The implosion of these bubbles produces intense shear forces and localized high temperatures, which break apart particles, disrupt cell structures, and evenly disperse materials throughout the sample. Ultrasonic homogenization is highly effective and can process small to very large volumes in batch or continuous flow-through mode with high precision. These advantages make ultrasonic homogenizers a reliable tool in laboratories and industrial production facilities for creating fine emulsions, dispersions, and solutions.
