Lysis is de term die de verstoring van celwanden of membranen beschrijft. Ultrasone verstoorders zijn een betrouwbaar hulpmiddel om cellen te breken en zo intracellulaire verbindingen zoals DNA, eiwitten, organellen en fytochemicaliën vrij te maken. Voor ultrasone lysis (ook wel celdisruptie genoemd) worden ultrasone golven met hoge intensiteit en lage frequentie toegepast om de celmembranen te verstoren. Omdat ultrasoon geluid de massaoverdracht bevordert, komt het intracellulaire materiaal vrij in het omringende oplosmiddel. De vloeistof die de inhoud van de gelyseerde cellen bevat, wordt lysaat genoemd.
Cellyse is de eerste stap in celfractionering, organelisolatie en eiwitextractie en -zuivering.
